RELIEF STRIKE
IN HAWKES BAY
UNEMPLOYED MEETING HELD (Per Press Association — Copy right.) NAPIER, June 28. A large meeting of unemployed 11l s morning, decided not to return to work. The action of tlie provincial council in handling the whole question over to tho National Council, was approved. Views were expressed that the nutter w,a.s national, and Mr Clancy (vice-president of the national Council) left for Wellington last night, with ia view to obtaining the active support of the unemployed there, to the strike.
A telegram, was received from Auckland, urging the-* men to hold out.
The meeting was addressed by the Mayor, Mr Barnard; M.P., and the Labour Officer, and the men were urged to return to work, as the original cause of the strike had been removed.
CONFERENCE AT HASTINGS
POSTPONEMENT OF ACTION
HASTINGS, June 28.
As the result: of "a- conference held this morning, attended by members of the Borough Council and representatives of the Fawkes Bay provincial council of the unemployed union, the Auckland and Wellington Councils of the union ace to be Advised bv the local council to postpone tailing any direction action they may have in view. A Hlawke.s Bay delegation from the Union is now in Wellington putting the case before the National Council.
Thig morning's decision is the outcome of an agreement that representatives of the local council of unemployed, the Mayors of Hastings and Napier, iar.d representatives of the Hawkes Bay County Council and Rivers Board shall meet in conference at the earliest possible moment, in an attempt to settle thejdisputei Mr F. J. Spear, representing the local unemployed couiMl, said hi s executive’s hands were tied now that the dispute had been referred to the national council. A suggestion .was: made by Councillor Falconer that a secret ballot should be held, made Mr Bellerby, the unemn ovpd -representative. say that the men did not want a secret ballot. DISTRESS FUND VOTE, WELLINGTON, June 18. Wellington Harbour Board to-night subscribed £IOO to the Mayor’s Relief of Distress Fund,.-to be allocated a s follows: Wellington £45, Wairairapa, £l4, Manawatu £23, and Hurt £lB. The Minister of Internal Affairs advised that lie would introduce legislation next session to validate the vote. DEDUCTIONS MADE FROM PAY. MASTER TON, June 29. Men at DevilV, Elbow camp ceased work because of tbe deduction of sixpence fine on tbe unemployment levy instalment due in May. The men stated that they were not in a position to pay the levy last month in order to avoid the penalty as six weeks had elapsed before a payment was made.
