the kawarau dam; DUNEDIN, June 23. Mr Credgington, a director of the Amalgamated Gold Mining Company announced to-day that the company proposes to close the gates of the dam at Franklin on Monday in order to permit the company’s engineers make soundings of the depth of water coming from the Shotover and Arrow rivers. T-his work is necessary in the preparation of the plans for the new dam which is to be- erected just bel-ow the junction of the Kawarau and Arrow rivers. Mr Credgington is unable to give any indication of the period -for which the gates will be closed, -and tit is inipossible to scy whether the effect of the closing of the dam will be of much benefit to the prospectors, who have been waiting on the banks of the river for a fall, which will enable them to reach the gold.
