The death took place at Christchurch on Thursday of Maria A! a non Brundall, wife of Mr Oscar Brundall, a former resident of llec-fton. Deceased wa s a natiie of Cmshington, a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs James McEwin, and was 50 years of age. She had not been in the best of health for some time, but her end came suddenly. She is survived by her husband, a daughter, two sons, three sisters and three brothtrs.

There are four weeks still to go but a good knitter laughs at time and sits up late. Considerable interest lias been arouse-d in the Poultry Club’s knitting competition. Needles are clicking encouragingly and the subject of jumpers, cardigans, baby garments- and new designs is discussed enthusiastically. The woman who does not knit these days is a back number and apart from the fact that substantial prizes are offered in this competition the contest itself should prove absorbingly interesting. With the object of protecting Arthur Pass from any further encroachment of the river during floods, the Alain Highways Board intends to construct two groynes on the right bank of the river at the upper end of the township. Work is to be started immediately. Mr E. C. Smart, assistant engineer, who is at present engaged on the restoration of the Arthur Pass—Otira section, which was damaged by fi-ocis, is to make a survey to define the present position of the river in relation to the road through the township.

There was an excellent attendance of members at the meeting of AH .Saints’ Young Men’s Clnb last evening. Two new members were elected, A good deal of business w a s brought up and dealt with, The social part of the evening was spent In a debate on the question “That the Observance of Anzo.c Day be Abolished.” My Odes’ t e am took the negative and Mr Adamson’s team the affirmative. Some very good arguments were brought forth by both sides, the speeches by the leaders being particularly good. The negative side were declared the winners.
