Steps were taken this morning at a meeting of the 0-uiterbury Members of Parliament and representatives of the Canterbury public accountants’ association'to call a, conference to discuss the proposal that the New Zealand public body debt and local body debt bo paTt in gold, to lie won -n New Zealand by means ol -a national gold mining- •expedition. - The meeting discussed ' the proposal put .forward recently by Mr W. l\l. Tyei's, d former president of th<> Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. The assistance of the Government in planning the scheme is advocated by the utilisation of unemployed labour.

THE CROMWELL DISTRICT. RIVERS AT LOW LEVEL. DUNEDIN, June 21. Owing to several hard frosts during tlio past week rivers in the Cromwell Idistrict arc now very low and if present conditions continue the expectation is that a very low winter level will be touched. Two shifts are steadily at work on tile Ounce, .Limited, claim, where a tunnel is being driven in toward the objective, a deep gutter which is' believed to exist at the back of the claim. A considerable amount of outside capital is still availabde for the purchase of areas on' Cromwell Flat in the vicinity of promising claims and several important transactions, are reported to havfe taken place.'
