A deputation representing the National Union of Unemployed formed at the recent conference at Wellington Yvaited on, th© Hon. Adam Hamilton, asking for the following:— The restoration of ' che' sustenance cuts; The abolition of the compulsory camp scheme; The continuance of piece work ; It was also asked. that no deduction be made YVhen sickness or Yvet weather caused inability to Yvorkers; also that in the cases where'wives obtain Yvork to assist the home no penalty by way of a .cut be : applied to the relief workers; and that. Yvhere relief workers regularly earn a sum in, addition to sustenance, the /emergency.charge of . ohe shilling • in. the pound be made on the additional earn, ings, and not on the. sustenance'payment,', v k to’l , -
. The spokesmen were Messrs-S: Villa (Secretary of the* Union), ■ R. Hedgland (assistant secretary), and D. MeLaughlan (treasurer). • ■. ' At the conclusion, the deputation asked for an extra million poiinds. for unemployment relief. • uu- - said - that'it Yvould be a * very difficult • matter to raise an extra million at the present time, although he had' no objection to taking’ the question to,the Cabinet. He admitted that there are a number .of anomalies in the present law, and said it was ’ possible that these would, be rectified- next'Session" if. the Prime Minister approved, of the Unemployment ....
