INQUEST VERDICT DRIVER COMMITTED FOR TRIAL (Per Press Association—Copyright). AUCKLAND, June 21. An inquest is being held to-day into the death of David Percival Ellis, who oil the evening of May 7th was found on the-roadside at Takapuna suffering from head injuries. Simultaneously evidence'was heard on a charge against Noel William McC’oll of Otorohanga, of negligent driving and causing Ellis’ death. • Evidence was given that just before Ellis was found there was a rainstorm, 1 and a small car, incompletely lighted, was observed travelling fast along the main road. : A sister-in-law of the accused was a passenger in the car, and she gave evidence that when the car Avas in Ilurstmere Road, (where Ellis Avas subsequently found), the accused’s Avife cnlled out—“l think we hit something”. TJie accused did not stop the car. Other evidence Avas given that later in the evening, a man, alleged to bo McColl, called at a garage add bought a headlight lamp and bulb. The T&ftl hand glass and bulb were broken, *afi(jl the lamp twisted. He said lie had collided with a lorrv.

The police produced a statement allegedly made by the accused, in which he said he hit something and got the AA'incl up. Accused pleaded not guilty and reserved his defence. He was committed for trial, bail being allowed. As coroner, the magistrate gave a verdict that deceased’s death was due to a fractured skull, caused by being knocked doAvn by a car driven by accused. He said the question whether the car Avas driven negligently, Avas for the jury to decide.
