HERO IN WELL
FATHER WHO WAS TOO LATE An example of a white man’s heroism in trying to save a native was revealed, at an inouiry in Pretoria into the death of John Pereival Ley, who died through being overcome by poisonous gases at the bottom of a disused well. A native in the employ of Mr Ley’s father stated that he had dropped his pipe, which had been given him by deceased into the well. Flo ■mentioned it to Mr Lev, and it was arranged that Ihry should vet it out the next day. The native was lowerd down the well, which contained no water, bitt could not find the pipe, and lost consciousness while searching for it. Mr Ley thereupon went down to his assistance, tied a rope round his body, but was himself overcome by the fumes.
Later, Mr Ley’s father found two ropes ening down the well, pulled up one which was weighted and so rescued his native servant, hut could not recover his son until life was extinct.
The well, was originally 63ft. to 70ft. deep,;btifcrit. had been partly filled with prickly pears and rubbish’, so that it was only about '2sft. deep when the accident occicrtedif
