The Hon. J. A. Hanna Unll Hbib C. J. Carrington have been re-appoint-ed to the Legislative . Council for seven years us irom to-day.
Mr Ha-nan, wlin sat in tbe House of Repiesentauivos as member for Invercargill lor twenty-six year©, is now Chairman of Gominictees of the Legislative.' Council. He is also a meniWif of the Statutes Revision Committee of that eha-mucr. He was a member of the Mackenzie Government of 191,2 and again held Cabinet rank during the War period, being Minister of Education and Justice Mr (Ja-rru.gLon wa© for some years chairman ol tiie Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates’ election committee in the Kainara electorate. He resides at Dargavillo and i, 3 a master builder. His appointment to the Legislative Council wa© made by Mr Coates in 1926. He is principally known as a strong opponent to the Bibl.e-in-schc.als movement.
The following have retired from the council through the effluxion of time since early in Mgy of this year: The Hons. Sir John -Sinclair, E. W. Alison, D. T. Fleming, G. J. Garland, J. B. Gow, A. F. Hawke, W. Stewart, G. M. Thompson, W. H. Triggs, Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, L. M. Isitt, .and G. Wliitty. Death has removed Sir Thomas Sidey and the Hon.. E. H. Clark. .

SITTING OF COMMISSION. (Per Press ' Association Copyright .) WELLINGTON, June 19. A joint ease on behalf of the engineering and metal work industries was represented to th& Tariff Commission to-day by Mr Mander, secretary of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Association, who ©bated that most of the material© required were imported from Britain who should continue to supply the materials in an unmanufactured, or semi-manufactured state, 'and that New Zealand ..should manufacture them ready for the . market. This was the principle recommended by the imperial economic committees on imperial industrial cooperation.' ' ■ • Mu- Mander said that thirty-six firms were engaged in manufacturing tinned plate and ©beet metal - working, employing 3.920 workers receiving 19,7C4 in wages. ■■ ■■■::■ The capital invested in the metal working industry in the engineering .1ff, 928.873. The reu&pui/ last year was £1,161,974. On behalf of the precision Manufacturing Company, Mr ‘ Rdbeft-Burn reouired a- protection bf 25 per centum. The case is proceeding. •'< v "'
