Among machines s in the, RoyaL’Air Force display at H©ndoii in June will be two standard, types of military aircraft, fitted with ergjnes consuming heavy oil,- which is less inflammable, cheaper and less bulky ‘than petrol; Its advocates believe that,-the introduction of Diesel engines iyill mark a involution in aviation.. Oh©-of the machines is fitted with Rolls-Royce watercooled .engines,>• and is the first, piesel aero machine to pass the Air Ministry type of test involving 50 -hours fullthrottle running. The. other plane, has an air-ccoled British Phoenix engine, the most powerful of its kind in- the world. Although weighing only 980 pounds complete, produces ,380 horse poner. It is a Wapiti machine in which this engine is. 'fitted. ’The machine has climbed to over 16,000 feet, and the engine has been run for over 180 hours. . ’ y •’ , - Another prominent exhibit is displayed, which, as. usual, ' will afford a striking demonstration of progress in aviation research,' s is a-short .six-engin-ed flying boat, weighing 33 tons, tne largest military .-aircraft m the world. Th© world’s fastest military aircraft will be seen in modified Hawker-Fairy aeroplanes, capable of doing over 260 miles hourly. • . " . ■ -
