OKARITO OPERATIONS PBOFIT OF £4278 FOR. HALF-YEAR The report of the Okarito Five Mile Beach Gold Dredging Company, Limited, South Westland, for the half- ! year ended April 1, states that values 1 steadny improved during that period, reaching the maximum return, 1410 z., forythe week ended April 1. The average weekly return was ,61.60 a. The total amount of gold won was 1417 oz., the j total net value being £BO2O. j Profit for the half-year at £4278 compares with £1639 in the previous six months’ period and £8262 for the period ended April 2, 1932. The directors state that on March 3 a 10 percent dividend was paid, absorbing £3500. After making provision for income tax- to cover the payment of tax in respect of all dividends declared to date, a balance of £1355 remained to credit of the profit and loss appropriation account and had been caried forward. The company had £4862 outstanding on April 1 for gold on hand and proceeds of gold not received. In view of the Company’s practice of exporting its gold on consignment and in view of the time taken for shipment to London olio San Francisco, this must always be a substantial item, but by adopting this method the company obtained tho highest price possible, the report states. The cost of running the dredge, including overhead, was £99 a week,' which was £47 10s less a week than the average total expenditure for the previous six-monthly period. This apparent difference was largely due to the fact that previous profit and loss accounts represented the whole expenditure incurred during the period, whereas the accounts now presented showed separately the costs of dredging operations, overhead expenses and expenditure of a capital nature.

“Women smoke too fast and too furiously,’’ Professor 'Steven s told his cl'*ss at an Illinois University, adding “the only way to get genuine psychological benefit out cf smoking is to [completely relax when you light • up, and take it easy. That is why men find a pipe more satisfying that a hurried cigarette. If you would really enjoy smoking smoke a pipe.” Quite true. But the professor might have said something about the paramount im- I ;portance of selecting your weed with judgment. Many a, man has “gone under'’ as the result of smoking the wrong tobaoco—tobacco, hat is, saturated with nicotine. Fortunately for New Zealanders the tobaccos in common use in this country, i.e. Riverhead Gold, Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cavendish, and Cut Plug No. 10 ,(Bulkhead), arc subjected to a> special purifying process which gets rid o,f the nicotine whilo at the same time developing flavour and aroma. These, be it noted, arc the only genuine toasted brands. None other 6 are manufactured. Their success has resulted i n imitations getting on to the market. Take care what you buy Advt.
