CORRESPONDENCE

BRUCE BAY BEACH , ,- j (To tlie Editor), Sir— As there have been several misleading; reports m different papers concerning the condition on the beach, 1 have a few remarks .tb make on the tlie subject. I noticed a letter from 1 .. J,i liiiris in last week’s Guardian* J agree with Mr Harris in what lie says, about the beach. It is fairly hard to make a living oil the beach, even wii.n equipped for the work. Judging by tlie look of the beach at the present hue the rh.ai ces of many: are not at ni 1 bright. It would be sheer madness far. men to come with the idea of making a living. However, as Mr Harris has been resident in this district for only 12 months and his experience of beach combing is limited to a few months, lie could have written without reflecting on the knowledge of residents. Many of them have from ten ‘to '••• thirty years’ residence and e.xporfcm&, fore taking everything ation 1 think that residents u Kitnya little more than a bird of passage. With regard to the report in the West Coast ■ notes in the Auckland to me that Our Own “Correspondent dent, stating that Hunts and Paringa benches, had not been tried yet, it seems to me that Our Own Corespondent' doss not know w hat he is talking about.' I suggest that he name a beach oil the West Coast that lias not been tried. If any beach has no men on at present it is because there is no gold on them to work. I think that correspondents shmiid make sure before publishing reports which are misleading to people. In conclusion I must ask that anybody who reads reports in the papers about good returns on Bruce Bay and near beaches and -who contemplated going to the beaches mentioned, must give the matter careful thought of they will be disappointed. J am etc., ' 1 A. B. Thompson. Bruce Bay.
