MINISTER REPLIES
TO CRITICISM. (Per Press Association—Copyright). - WELLINGTON, June 13. Referring to-day to criticism levelled by legal practitioners at the proposal to give more work to Justices of the Peace, Hon. J. A. Cobbe said bis Christchurch remarks had been given a much wider significance than was .intended. No change in legislation extending the powers of Justices was contemplated. He did not intend to convex that the English practiic/J should be adopted in to to, hut rather refererd to it as a precedent for a fuller use of Justices. Owing to the financial position, it had been necessary to reduce the Magisterial sittings in country- courts, and that .might entail a re-allocation of the work and a more frequent attendance of Justices. The services of Justices should be utilised as much as possible.
