WOMAN KILLED

STRUCK BY POLE WHILE STANDING ON TRAM STEP (Per Press Association—Copyright). AUCKLAND, June 12. ■Shocking injiuies to her head, which proved fatal an hour later, were rtceiv. ed by Mrs Yvonne Wheadon, aged 2i> years, when she came into contact with a centrepole while standing on the front step of a tramcar in Pitt Street this evening. The conductor of the tramcar Said Mrs Wheadon and her two children boarded the car at 'Point Chevalier. When the tram reached Point Chevalier Theatre, the children left the car to go to the pictures. Their mother continued the trip towards the city. “Ao we were coining clown Pitt Street, the woman, who was in the front half cf the tram, suddenly left her seat and hurried toward the front platform,” said the conductor. “She looked over the chain on the right band side of the platform and stood for a moment on the step. She was immediately struck violently against the centrepole and knocked from the step on to the roadway.” Mrs Wheadon, who was suffering grave head injuries, died in the hospital. She is survived by her husband and two children. Her husband j left home for camp in the country j this morning. The children, who are ycung are being cared for by friends.
