MAGISTERIAL

MR H. A. YOUNG NOW SENIOR S.M. Mr H. A. Young, S.M., has by the retirement from the magistracy of Mr E. C. Cutten, S.M., become senior magistrate in New Zealand. Born in 1874 at Grey mouth, Mr Young was educated at Nelson College and at Canterbury qualifying as a solicitor Mr Young Began practising his profession in Westport, where he built up a sound mining practice. In 1902 he went to South Africa, where he was appointed Public Prosecutor in the Transvaal. Later he was transferred to Pretoria. In 1904 Mr Young was appointed a magistrate, and 'was subsequently stationed at Johannesburg and Pretoria. He returned to New Zealand in 1908, and was immediately made a magistrate and mining warden in Central Otago. Since then he has been station, ed a.t Gore, Dunedin, and 'Hamilton. In 1925 he came to Christchurch as second magistrate to Mr H. L. Widoowson, 1 SAL, and on Mr Widdowson’s retirement in 1927 Mr Young became senior magistrate at Christchurch.
