VERY LUCKY MAN

INCIDENT AT ELECTIONS. WELLINGTON, May 26. A remarkable escape from death, and an election defeat, which was turndd into victory by the official count, have made life very exciting in the last three weeks for Mr A. Walker, Eastbourne’s representative on the Hutt Valiey Electric Power Board. On the night before the municipal elections Mr Walker and his wife were in a car collision with a railway train at a levelcrossing, but neither was seriously injured. Some 24 hours later he received the disappointing news that ffie had lost his seat on the Power Board by a small margin.

Mr Walker was officially fare welled at the next meeting of the board, only to hear the next day that he had retained his seat by an equally small margin. Pleasant reference to these experiences was made last week by the chairman of the board, Mr S. Blackley, in welcoming to the board meeting; Mr Walker, and the newly-elected representative of the Upper Hutt borough, Mr W. Greig. A remarkable coincidence was brought to light when Mr Greig mentioned that his son was the driver of the locomotive with which Mr Walker’s car had collided.
