FRAUD CHARGE
£7 BY CONFIDENCE TR'ICK. TWO REMANDED FOR SENTENCE. (per. Press *x*aoomi tun • i !, 'PV> u/at.. NEW PLYMOUTH, May 25. Stating that h» had. been offered odds of zoa to 1 on a horse belonging to Adam Lile, hotelkeeper, Herbert Langinan Oliver, a farm labourer, was the main police witness against Edward Mount-ford Tunnecliffe and John Rupert Lawrence, i who were charged in the Supreme Court with obtaining £7 by fraud, conspiracy to de.'raud, and uiatt.
Oliver said that he had been induced- by Tunnecliffe to give the latter £7 ostensibly to back a “sure winner.'' Lawrence produced £2O in witness’ presence to back the horse, and gave the money to Tunnecliffe. Olive: followed suit with liis £’7. He was to meet the two men later to collect, but they disappeared.
The jury returned a verdict that both, accused were guilty of conspiracy to . defraud and false pretences. The prisoners were remanded for sentence.
