“What is this new spirit of Gerrran nationslismsaid Sir Austen Chamberlain in the House of Commons. “The worst, of the All-Prussian Imperialism, i with an added savgery. •- racial pride, is an exclusiuem-’s which cannot allow to any follow-subject not of ‘pure Nordic birth’ equrhty of rights and citizenship within tho tion to which he belongs. Are you
going to discuss revision with a Government like that;-' Arc you going to discuss with suea a Government the Polish Corridor? The Polish Corridor is inhabited by Poles; does the Government dare to nut another Pols under the heel of such a Government ? . .
After all, we stand for son ething in this country. Our traditions count for our own people and for Europe and tlie world. Europe is menaced and Germany is afflicted by this narrow, exclusive, aggressive spirit, where it is a c.ime lo.be in favour of peace and a- crime to be a- Jew. That is not a Germany to which we can afford to mak-M concessions. (Cheers). That is not a Germany to which Europe can afford to give the equality of which the Prime Minister spoke. That is more than he ever promised. I understood the promise made by the Five Powers was of equality of status, to be reached by stages. Before you can afford t-o disarm or to uige others to disarm you must- sec a Germany whose mind is turned to peace, who will use the equality of status to secure her own safety, hut not to menace the safety of others; a Geimany which has learned not only how to live herself, but liow to let others live inside her and beside her.“ (Loud cheers.)
