PATIENT DIES IN HOSPITAL. I'he matron of 1 the-. Maternity Hospital said Miss McConnell complained - of pains in the chest, and it was arranged that she could go to the Royal Infirmary.
A doctor said ‘ the gin was being treated for a Tlieuihatjc (condition. He wrote to th e Royal Infirmary explaining thi3, and asking . that she euould be treated in - the .medical wal’d. ' The assistant-superintendent of the Royal Infirmary said' he received' the doctor’s detter j but did not give any, instructions as to which ward the girl was to be sent. to. TLate the s ame evening he learned that she had died after an abdominal operation. A surgeon at the infirmary fi a ’d an unqualified student who assisted him told him that a- woman had come in suffering from what he described as an acute condition ln : her abdomen. The student added that in his opinion'- she ought to he sent to the giirgical ward;
Professor John Glaister,, of gow 'University, who conducted the post-mortem, said he could fin'd no reason for the operation. !In bis ’opinion. Mi-s McConnell would have been alive that day if she had been put to 'bed -arid treated with rest. Th e jury expressed the opinion that r.o fault could be attached to the doctors, but that the urnagenient of the Royal Infirmary should take -proper dteps iifi 'ifutil-re to ’ prevent patients being Rent to the Wrong ward. They deplored the laxity and the b'undoimade by officials, in consequence of which Miss .McConnell was placed ifc a- wrong ward and an operating resulted, which, however, w!>s -jiTohe in good faith by doctors.
