COAL MINES
MR BISHOP OPTIMISTIC,
(per Press 'Association — Copyright.)
WELLINGTON, May 19,
Th<j Secretary of the New Zealand Coal Maie. Owners' 'Association (Mr Bishop) has returned from Christchurch. [The Press Association message from Auckland of the 17th was shown him. Mr Bishop said he felt sure the statement attributed to Mr Ho’,gate, that trouble was brewing on the West Coast in connection with the coal mines agreement, arose from some misunderstanding. Work in all the mines belonging to members of the Association who were parties to the agreement made with coal miners in 1932, were still being carried on under the terms of that agreement, which has expired some days ago. The Secretary of the Miners’ strict Council wrote suggesting a conference be held about the end of this month at the , s ame time as ,another conference, already arranged. >in connection with emrine drives * agreement, for the purpose oi considering terms of employment v-r ** further period. There is not, the slightest reason for the belief that any trouble is Jikely to arise out of these discussions, 'and he did not think Mr Holgate had intended to convey the impression that any difficulties 'were anticipated.
