At a jpeeting of the coninfittcc of the Reef ton Jockey Club, the statement of accounts in connection with the repent meeting wa,s submitted, showing -a small credit balance This was considered eminently satisfactory and was adopted. The other business was confined to routing matters. -.
The annual meeting of the Westland County Council takes place at noon on Wednesday when the election of Chairman for the year will be the business. At 2 p.m. the same day the Council will hold an ordinary meeting for the transaction of general business.
During the week an investigation was made by Public Works officers into the feasibility of extending the Humphreys Gully water race for the purpose of mining at Blue Spur and other localities where adequate water supplies are net available at present The proposal has come through the Unemployed 'Board, it having been suggested that useful work could be provided and lucrative mining employment would result when the water is brought on the field. There is a very large area of country capable of h®ing served with a good deal of auriferous terrace country ’suitable for sluicing. The main race is owned privately and is. an excellent water-right, and it is expected arrangements can he made to utilise the water, if the scheme for extension can bo carried through.
“The wonderful organisation of the British factories was one---of the things that impressed me most while I was Home,” said -Mr R. Bauchop, a. Southland sawmillev, on his return by the Remucra from London. Mr Bauchop w.’s in particularly -close touch with th e . motor industry, and said that the English factories were very busy. Exports to- all parts of the world hact shown a tendency to increase. Although difficult times were being experienced in the North of England ayd in Scotland, there were few sig n s oi depression in the South. In London only 5 per cent, of the employable population was without work, and it was wonderful to see the industrial activity in the capital.

The death occurred at Westport on Wednesday, of Mr Patrick Lee, aged 72 years. A"native of Kimhara, County Galway, he arrived in New Zealand 50 ij(3ar s ago, and followed gold-mining at Peefton, and later, coil-mining at Dehmiston. He was employed on the harbour works at Westport, -until he retired owing to ill-health. He is . survived by his widow, one -daughter, Mrs J. McLoy, and two sisters, Mis?. A. llfee and Mrs Roberts, all of Westport. He also leaves ,a, step-daughter, Mrs A'( B. Cameron, of the Leaver Settlement, -and a step-son, Mr A. Dove, of Auckland.
“It seems rather strange that while the banks have inflated our currency by the Government’s orders, they are still circulating rotes on the 'face of which they promise to pay one pound sterling,” said Mr J. Hisiop at' a- meeiing of the Economic Society last evening. He added that the word “sterling’’ hrd been omitted from many of the newer Australian notes.. The president, Mr W. H. Cocker, said the word seemed to be only “a pleasing appellation.” So far as he was aware the original meaning of the word was simply, “full value.” Some people still made out cheques for “one pound sterling.”' .Mr H. !R. Bod well remarked that it wou’d be interestirg to hear what such people would say if the bank debited' their account with an extra 25 per cent, every time the word appeared.
A resident of Smithfield, Wanganui, was puzzled for two or three -nights by strange noises about the house. A search revealed a number of articles overturned in the wash-house, but ct'd hot bring to light the idehtity of the ilttjutdeiY After a- vaitl built about the wash-house; the owner decided to try the chimney of the sitting room. He kindled a fire and sent his wife outside to watch the top of the chimney. As the fire gathered strength he heard a sneeze behind th e register grate. He appl-ed more wood, but still ft was a long time before the modern salamander made its appearance. At last an opossum, unable to stand the heat and smoke any longer, hopped out into the sitting room and was quickly despatched.
Tim Hokitika Poultry Chib's annual show will be held here on June 21 and 22 in the Soldiers’ Hall The C’ub lv-s been allotted four of the South Island Association’s championships, which will be conducted in conjunction with the show. Of these, three .are for poultry, and one for pigeons, and they will be undoubtedly responsible for attracting considerable outside entries. A special cup has bee, n donated for the best pigeon in the show, and local fanciers will b e well to the fore with their entries. The ..schedule, which will be available shortly, makes provision for a- wide range of classes, and will meet with the approval of all exhibitors. Entries will be called for at an early date, and already wide support h?s been assured, so that prospects for a successful show at this early stage are heartening. Necessary particulars are available from the secretary (Mr T. Lynch).
