CHINESE TROOPS EVACUATING.

SHANGHAI, May 17

The departure of the Nanking Government’s emissaries northward, bearing terms designed to stop the present hostilities in the Peking area, was announced to-day. It was also announced to-day that the Chinese and Japanese have virtually agreed to terms for a cessation of the hostilities. The terms are along the lines of those for the similar stoppage of the Chapei fighting at Shanghai last year. The exact nature of the proposals has not been divulged.

Chinese troops, under General Hochukuo, commenced evacuating Tangslian on Monday night, while the Japanese troops are now stated to have left Waipeng, en route for Tangshan.

The. Chinese forces are concentrating at Lutai, thirty miles west of Tangsharl.

The foreign concession at Tientsin is receiving a huge influx of Chinese refugees, > ./. The exodus.qf,,>l he,; Chinese from Peking is now reading ( three thousand daily. : .

ANGLO-JAPANESE TREATY

RUGBY, May 16

Hon, W. C. llunciman (chairman 0 f the Board of Trade), replying in the House of Commons to a question, said that the requisite notice of twelve months was being given forthwith to terminate the application of the AngloJapanese Treaty to the British territories in West Africa.
