Reporting to the .• W.aihi Hospital Board at its monthly meeting last evening, the medical supwintendent, Dr L. R. Hetherington, stated that with the; staff; constituted as at present too great a strain was being thrown on the trained members, and to obviate this he. recommended'' an increase in the number of trained nurses, and a reduction of untrained, members of the staff.
The board adopted the recommendation, and tliis morning the administrative heads of the institution made a. move toward giving effect to the superintendent’s proposals by giving notice of dismissal to four of the,, last nursing aids, appointed. When this wasmade known four other members of the staff, in order to express sympathy, with those dismissed, tendered their resignations. v The outcome was that the authorities, in order to. avoid, a shortage' of staff decided to accept the resignations cf the'four nurses who had giyen notice and retain the services of the. nursing aids upon- whom, notice had, been served. The attitude of the latter in tire matter following this development has not yet been made known.
