SWINE FEVER

POSSIBILITY OP ITS SPREADING,

DRASTIC PRECAUTIONS NEEDED

(Per Press Association - Copyright.)

WELLINGTON, May 16.

There are indications that swine fever may yet spread over a considerable area, unless steps are taken of an immediate and drastic nature. Two more farms u'n the affected area at Johnsonville showed indication of the disease overnight, making seven in that district.

It seems that the outbreak was not reported to the Department as soon as might have been the case. 'lt is not generally known at Normandale. At Lower Hutt it was mentioned for the first time to-day, but occurred a week ago. This necessitates a wider area of examinatou by the Stock Department than at first supposed.

It is stated the. • trouble is more likely to spread in rainy, misty weather than-if it is line, owing to. drainage infecting creeks. So far no pigs have been destroyed by the Department, which is awaiting the completion of trenches to receive them.
