The ‘‘Daily Telegraph's” naval correspondent, Hector Bywater, draws attention to -'the Japanese naval manoeuvres, to be held in August, which will be on an unprecedented scale. Two hundred vessels will be engaged. The venue of the manoeuvres, he says, is significant, being in Hie neighbourhood of the ex-German islands of the Western Pacific, comprising the Mariana, .Caroline, Perlaw and Marshall groups. Thi 5 area is openly described as Japan’s foremo s t- rampart against aggression. It has, he adds, been made clear t-hat Japan intends to hold these islands. Any manoeuvres are designed to test their value as a- -basis for the Japanese battle fleet and its auxiliary forces.
