THE SALES TAX
PAYMENT BY CHEQUE.

AUCKLAND, May 14
The circular to merchants stating that cheques in payment of sales tax would not be accepted unless secured by a bank guarantee, recently issued by the collector of customs at Auckland, air J. Mclntosh, and subsequently withdrawn by him pending the decision of the Minister of Customs, was discussed by the Council of- the Auckland Chamber' of Commerce'.
The council approved of the letter j sent to the Minister bv the president j of the chamber, Mr Harvey Turner, j requesting that the requirements or marking cheques be waived, and the following resolution was carried: — “That in view of the unnecessary inconveniences caused to the commercial community by. the arbitrary decisions# of some Government officials, as exemplified by the recent circular issued by the collector of sales tax at Auckland, members be asked to report to their chambers all instances of restrictive methods and undue interference byGovernment officials, such cases to lie referred to- the Associated Chambers of Commerce, urging that suitable action be taken;”
