DAIRY PRODUCE

NEW CONTRACT FOR CARRIAGE

E'LUIS STAR, LINE SEEKS SHARE

WELLINGTON, April 27.

The following letter from the Blue Star Line reached the New Zealand

Dairy Produce Export Board’s London office on Thursday: “We understand that your board is shortly making a new contract for the carriage of refrigerated produce from New Zealand to the United Kingdom’ and elsewhere, and wo wish -to hare an opportunity of taki'pg a share in this contract. We are prepared to undertake similar obligations to those entered into by other shipowners, and to make concessions in freight. We will undertake to provide one fast modern ship monthly, especially equipped and experienced not only in the carriage of frozen beef, mutton and lamb, fruit and dairy produce, hut also of Hulled beef, which it would he to the great advantage of New Zealand to develop. “The capital and management of this company are entirely ■ British, and, in addition, a number of our ships have been built with the assistance of the British Government under the Trade Facilities Act. The Ottawa arrangements have considerably* reduced the requirements of the service in which these boats have been employed. It seems only reasonable that British ships should lie allowed to participate in the development of Empire trade. That there is room for these ships in the New Zea-land-Homo’vnrds schedule is shown by the fact that the existing lines are chartering vessels, formerly employed in the carriage of meat from other

countries, and propose building additional steamers.”
