MOST IMPROPER

CIVIL SERVANTS ON LOCAL BODIES.

COMMISSIONER’S DISAPPROVAL.

(Per Press Association — Copyright.)

WELLINGTON, April 26.

In 3 . statement Mr P. Verscliaffelt, said that, although it wa s permissible for the officers of the Public Service To become members of local bodies, the policy adopted was that, in most cases, it was distinctly inadvisable for them to do so. In certain cases it was most improper that public servants should be members of such local authorities as City and Borough Councils and Hospital Boards. In several cases where officers had been appointed, they had been required to resign. In many cases an officer’s duties brought him in control with local authorities, and should he be a member of any particular authority, his position might easily become an awkward one.
