WESTLAND COMMITTEE MEETING
ARRANGEMENTS FOR FESTIVAL
A meeting, of the committee of the Westland Competitions Society was held •at the 'County Chambers at 7.30 o’clock on -Holiday evening. Present: Mr H. M. Coulson (president), Revs. Hailwood, Airs McGaiin, Messrs R. Lynn, 1). J. Evans, M. A. Stapleton, W. E. Richards, H. W. Sweuey, and W. Lindsay, lion, secretary. Mr Evans welcomed Mr Coulson to
the position of president, and was sure
with Mr Coulsoii’s interest in elocutionary work lie would make a. pronounced success of the post. (Applause.) Mr Coulson thanked the meeting for its cordial welcome, and hoped lie would
give the Society every satisfaction
He accepted the post with pleasure, appreciating the work of the Society,
and he trusted their associations would be pleasant. Mr Lindsay reported that the entries totalled about 500, «. few less titan last year, but equal to the proceeding year. The elocution and dancing sections were the strongest, but there was a fair entry of vocal and instrumental competitors, the juveniles prevailing. General arrangements were then considered and various appointments made. The Competitions will open at the Princess Theatre on Thursday evening, | A Lay 4, when a liberal programme oov- ! ering all sections will be put forward, j Miss O’Connor of Christchurch will judge the dancing, Air T. T.earmoni of Grevmouth, ('locution ; and Mr G. Moss of Oroymoutli, the musical section. On I Friday and Saturday, May 5 and 6, .and on Monday May 8, the Competitions will be continued in All Saints’ Hall, with the dancing section in the day time at the Princess Theatre. There will bo a demonstration concert at the Princess Theatre on Tuesday, May 9. The previous decision to reduce members’ tickets to 10/6 was confirmed, and the president and Rev. Hailwood were appointed a sub-committee to canvas for additional members so a s to strengthen the finances. Family season tickets were fixed at 6/-, and adult season tickets at 4/-. A special charge for admission will lie made for the demonstration concert. Tickets are obtainable at Rrocklcliursts, Rovell St. ? and from the secretary, president or treasurer (Mr Evans) at the County Office.
Mr Lindsay was asked to arrange the several programmes, and to select a suitable piano. Mr Lynn undertook to arrange the stage for the various sessions.
Members expressed their satisfaction at the prospect of a very successful festival. The entries indicated good competition. and would include many new faces, including a number of entrants from Grcymouth. It was hoped to again enjoy a good measure of public support to encourage the continuance of the annual festival.
