PURSER’S THEFT

CHRISTCHURCH, April 22
Frederick Spencer Hamlin, aged 28, who‘for the last six months has been attached to tlio ferry steamer Maori as purser, pleaded guilty at the Magistrate's Court to a charge of stealing sums of money totalling £SB 15s, the property of the Union Steam Ship Company. He was admitted t° pro'-'tieii for twm years, and was ordered to make restitution.
it was stated by the police.that the accuse ! s duties involved tile collection and handling of money on behalf of the company, and on two occasions be bad converted money to his own use. On one occasion lie had gone to races and lost the lot.
When approached by the poire the accused bad frankly admitted the offence.
