BARCELONA, April 21
In th e first round of the finis Gup contest, F. J. Perry (Enghnd) beat Maier, 7—5, 7—5, 6—2; nrd H. W. Austin (England) beat -Sindren 6—o, 6_3, 6—2. Maier’s chief asset w a s a fast, highkicking service which often rendered him invincible. Perry, however, .speedily mastered it, and counter attacked with excellent ground shots. Austin caused a sensation 'by pl a 5" i-ng in running shorts. This w?.s unprecedented in the Davis Cup contest. Gaier and Dural beat Perry and Hughes 6—3 ; 6—l, I—6, 46, 6—o. The Spaniards were speedier in the. first arid second s ets. Though th e Englishmen’s determined stand in the third set : was aggressively continued in the fourth, accompanied by Perry’s hurricane service,' they could not overcome the initial leeway. The better team won.
