SUEZ CANAL

DOMINION SHARE IN CONTROL.

LONDON, April 10

A proposal that Australia,’ India, South .^jijjc/t; and British -golopies., ..in the Far East .should be represented "on the boarj.li of management of the Suez Canal, was made by Sir Arnold Wilson in an address before the Asian Society to-day. vp '" :

He suggested that the 4G per cent share holding maintained by the British Government should be transferred to 703 individual trustee, each having ten votes, and thus being able to control meetings of tile board. “The British Government’s unconscionable, profit of 44 per cent is derived by taxing an artery of commerce which is as predominantly'British ns the Panama Canal is predominantly American, Sir Arnold continued. “The Suez Canal dues could be halved and. still leave dividends double those of any gilt-edged investment. The effect of the present high charges is to discourage European trade with Asia and subsidise Japanese and American trade.

The canal has become not a highway but a barrier to commerce.”
