LAWN TENNIS

S.l. JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP.

SUCCESS FOR R, G, PATTINSON.

(Per Press Association — Copyright

CHRISTCHURCH, April 18,

R. G. Pattinson, of Runanga, won the South Island Junior Singles Championship to-day, beating J. M. Fisher (Ashburton) in the final, 6/1, 6/3. Pattinson played brilliantly in this match, driving with speed and a good length to the side lines, and coming into the net to score with well-placed volleys. Fisher offered strong resistance,- but, could not kep up with the pace set by Pattinson. In this match Pattinson played with cool judgment and showed that he is steadily improving.: His recent tournament experience has brought about a marked improvement. His play is more finished. On the way to the final Pattinson was not seriously troubled. His closest game was against W. A. Welsh. which he won 9/7. Pattinson was too clever at the critical stages. Pattinson’s play improved with each round, and he played himself into great form for the final. This event attracted a strong entry as usual. The weather conditions have been ideal and the tournament has attracted record galleries.
