Strong protests at granting permits ; to hold lotteries was made to the Hon. j Mr Young by a deputation of citizens, j including Archbishop Averill, and Dr | J. J. North (President of the Council | of Christian Congregations). | Replying, the Minister 6 a,id he was g.'ud to hear an expression 0 f views on s o important a matter of great social interest to the community. While the deputation represented the volume of public opinion, he said that j what had been impressing him greatly j was the tremendous following 0 f public ' opinion that was out to get an oppor- | tunity t Q participate in the Art Unions, j During the last week of the session, i lie had ian average of eight applications i for Art Unions daily, reresenting <Jif- j j ferent interests. That went on all the ■ time. They could see how widespread i was the desire to .hold Art Unions. I Regarding depots for selling tickets ' I°n main streets, this was largely a,' j matter for regulation by municipal i authorities, and mat th e Government. ! There was a wide feeling that the j community wanted to gamble, and | would gamble. It had been urged that jof there wais a great lottery in the | Dominion, money would not go to : foreign lotteries. R e was not of that opinion, but he believed there wag such a great desir e to gamble, that it was better that tflie t Government should control and regulate it t 0 e nsure that those who invested in lotteries would have a clean run.
