APPEAL FOR AID

AUCKLAND’S UNEMPLOYED GIRLS

deputation to the mayor

AUCKLAND, April 10. j An appeal (or assistance for the families of relief workers and particularly the unemployed girls of the city was made by a deputation of women which waited on the Mayor, Mr G. W. Hutchison, yesterday. The Mayor s aid hie sympathies were with the relief workers and their families, but his -influencel with the Unemployment Board was not so great a» s°me peopre thought.

The suggestion was made by Mrs Strongman that some accommodation should be provided for homelesg and penniless girls coming to the city. S f m did not flavour a “doss house” for girls,

but that would 'be better than nothing. If such girls desired to enter one of the established institutions they had first to gc : t recommendations from a clergyman. The proposal of a hostel for girls was not favoured by the Mayor, who said it would call for a lot of super-’ vision and cost. He thought it wou d be ■ far better to e ndeavour to find places for the girls in private’ homes. Girls registered at the women’s central bureau could get a hot meal and morning and afternoon tea at the work ■•centre. They also received '7,3 f 6d a week. He realised that this 7s 6d was not sufficient to provide them with clothing and a room. On the other liajnd, they could make their own clothes at the centre at a nominal cost under the supervision of the sewing mistress.
