The mu no was being use'cl by the GreymoutJi Philharmonic Society in the preparation of an opera, and is particuiaily .valuable in that similar copies are practically unobtainable at present. A race between the Grey mouth borough and county road rollers has been agreed upon. It wil be held during carnival week. The Greynmuth jk>rough Council decided to fall in with the request of the organic"- of the carnival. Cr. McGinley objected. Cr. The monthly meeting of Rimu and Woodstock Women’s Institute took place at Rimu Public Library on Wednesday evening, April sth., Mrs Seddon presided over nineteen members. Mrs Lewis read the minutes of last annual meeting. The topic of the evening was the Institute’s first birthday which will take place in May. Two very keen competitions were greatly enjoyed, for which prizes were given. The first L-ing “What you bring with you,” was won by Miss Avis Muir, the second, “Found in « dining room,” was won by Miss Elva Stoop. Two new memberr, were enrolled. A dainty •supper was served by the hostesses Misses J. Honey 'and D. Inwood, brought a very pleasant evening to a close.

The sixth annual meeting of All ■Saints’ Young Mien’s Club was held last evening, Mr W. E. Richards presiding over a fair number of members. Mr J. Daily lias been appointed by the Westport Fire Board to the position of superintendent of the Westport Volunteer Fire Brigade and Mr C. Callaghan to the position of deputy superintendent. Messrs Daily and Callaghan were formerly deputy superintendent and senior foreman respectively, The appointments, which take effect immediately, were necessitated by the resignation of Superintendent F. Morgan.

Last night a lire occurred at Dobson, causing the complete destruction or two buildings. Each was a combined confectionery shop and dwelling, the owners being Mr T. Gilligan and Mrs R. D. Low. The structures were 11c more than six feet 'apart. At midnight an alarm was given, nearby at the Cosmopolitan Hotel, the inmates of which were roused by a man knocking on the door, and the school hell was then sounded, hut both places were ablaze by the time the residents gathered and it was impossible to save anything. The fire started in a room of Gilligan’s building, which was at the time unoccupied, while a man residing in Low’s building made his escape. Smoke forced back twomen who entered one of the places with the idea of saving furniture. The reflection of the five was visible in Greymouth. Mr J. T. Hill’s house was saved by willing workers.
