N.Z. EMBARGO

AUSTRALIA SEEKS REMOVAL.

BIG LOSS TO COMMONWEALTH.

WELLINGTON, April 4

Although the members of the Australian Trade Delegation have arranged to leave Auckland on Friday on their return to Australia it is possible their plans will be altered to enable the discussions with the Neiv Zealand representatives to continue.

Australia is anxious to secure the removal of the New Zealand embargo on Australian fruit and vegetables, which is causing a loss of over three hundred thousand a year to the Australian exporters. New Zealand has countered this with the suggestion thai the embargo on the New Zealand potatoes entering Australia should be removed, and it is .this proposal which is stated to be giving the Australian delegation the greatest concern. Speaking at an Australian Society luncheon to-day, Senator Massey Greene said that he had still every hope that they would eventually be able to frame a new agreement which would be for the mutual benefit of both countries.

NO AGREEMENT REACHED YET.

STATEMENT IN FEDERAL HOUSE

CANBERRA, April 4

Hon. Mr Latham Acting Prime Minister replying to a question in the House of Representatives to day, said that although it was quite natural that New Zealand desired the removal of Australia’s potato embargo, Senator Massey Greene had not entered any agreement. which would bind the Commonwealth Parliament, and no agreement with the Dominion respecting any item covered by the Tariff would be made without its submission to Parliament. Mr Latham emphasised that the embargo on New Zealand potatoes was a quarantine restriction, which was amono the subjects being discussed in New Zealand.
