Leaving Lyttelton •at IQ a.m. to* day H.M.S. Diomede, carried out a, speed trial arriving at Wellington at 5.30 p.m., thus takiiig six hours tAventy-fiv.e minutes in steaming the 175 miles. ’At' times the cruiser attained a speed of over 27 pknots an. hour but no attempt . was made to use her maximum speed of 29 knots. Bad Aveather was encountered, the. vessel meeting • a iheavy fog at noon, and the speed Avas slowed .for an hour rtii,l conditions became clearer. During the latter half of the trial, heavy seas, Avith a Avind of gale force caused Iher to talc© large quantities of Avater on 'board. The Diomede stood the test remarkably Avell, demonstrating she is a staunch craft-.. The Diomede .will leave for Auckland on Monday to prepare for a voyage to the Islands Avith the GovernorGeneral.
