RISE' IN PRICE OF SPIRITS,
CHRISTCHURCH EXPECTATION
CHRISTCHURCH, March 25
An increase in thd price of spirits bought by the bottle in Christchurch hotels may be expected, with the adoption of a new price list by the Licensed Victuallers’ Association. It is stated that the new list will be put into effect in nearly all', the hotels. The increase in price has been; brought about by the 15 pert cent increase in the exchange rate, <and the sales tax. All imported liquors will be affected, the rise in price being about 10 per cent. The increase applies only to spirits sold by the bottle. Nips sold over the bar counter will cost the saihq as they do now; but measures will be installed, replacing the custom still followed in most hotels of handing the customer the bottle, and allowing him to pour out his own drink. Many of these measures have been ordered from overseas, and some hotelkeeex's ■ have installed locally-made measures. It is stated that betel* prices will not bo altered. ‘‘The increase in the price of spirits is unavoidable, for we have really been selling them at cost price,” a prominent hotel keeper said yesterday • • "*"'■'
