MELBOURNE, March 24

Found .staggering i n .front of the Melbourne Publio Library with her clothing i n shreds, Mr s Ruth Randell, aged about 40 years, of levers Place, Carlton, said she had been savagely slashed w : ith a saw. Beside nearly 50 small. cuts caused by the teeth of a saw 0 n different part s of her body, the woman had a isevere wound in the forearm. The muscles 0 f the forearm had been severed and the bone exposed. Another slash had caused a .severe wceration in the shoulder. About 30 stitches were inserted in th e wounds when she was admitted to the Melbourne Hospital. The woman said that an affray commenced soon after eight o’clock and that a man swung .a handsaw among a group of three or four women. She informed the police also that the man struck her 10 times. Facing him she backed away, leaving a trail of ijloou on the roadway, and she commenced to walk to the Melbourne Hospital. She staggered as far as th c Public Library, where a policeman stopped her -and took her to the hospital. In levers Place the affray, which bad lasted mor e than half an hour, still continued. Another woman received a severe cut on the finger. Further trouble between jthe man with Yam is aw and several friends and a number 0 f bystanders appeared to be imminent when two constables arrived. A man was arrested. Later he was admitted ito (the Melbourne Hospital suffering from supposed cerebral hemorrhage. He wa s placed in a ward under police guard.
