While clearing earth from.the face of a- quarry on the original Cullen homsetead at Maung'aturoto, Messrs G. and B.’ Cullen-, the present occupiers of the property, unearthed the skeleton of a man.
The remains were in a crouching ositicn'. Behind the ear a large hole indicated a ’ blow, .'apparently made with a■ club. Constable Frost was advised, and with the district coroner, Mr T. Healey, examined the skull. It was agreed - that .the reinq ins, were those of a- Maori, probably about 50 years .old.-. The teeth were, well pre-i served, hut worn. As the holding was settled by the Cullen family in 1863, the- skeleton lias la’ll undiscovered for nearly 70 years. " '
