BIG-GAME FISHING
IN AUSTRALIAN WATERS/'
ON NEW SOUTH WALES COAST.

A statement' that big-game fishing uu the New South Wales coast had wonderful possibilities, and was probably better than that of New Zealand, was made by Mr It, Smith, a .frazier. of Yass, to members of the New South Wales Rod Fishers’ Association lately. Mr Smith recently caught a 3001 b swordfish off the south coast. Mr Smith said that the lure of catching swordfish in New Zealand brought in about £1,000.000 t 0 the Dominion from fishing enthusiasts. The same sport was obtainable on the'New South Wales coast, and much of that monej could be spent there with much benenv to the P+"+e. Tt; do tremendous to the “king of sports.” For a long time, said Mr Smith, he had been convinced that swordfish were to he caught off the south coast. A friend of his—Dr Little, an ardent fisherman—shared the same views, His views had been vindicated by the catching. of the swordfish, wbi<"h took overall hour to land, and which provided a wonderful fight. Tt took out about 3fio yards of line, and broke the water nine times. Tt was the thrill of a lifetime. At times the fish seemed to stand out ol the. water and fight the line.
“Swordfish have been seen along the New South Wales coast Horn Port Stephens to Twofold Bay,” said Mr Smith. The mako shark, known as the bltienointer, and a similar shark to the variety caught in Now Zon’aivl waters, was even a more wonderful fighter than the swordfish, he said, and was plentiful off the coast. There were also man-i’ other varieties of sharks, which provided excellent gixri, end the o-jant tunney. Australian fishermen did not seem to know how to go after their eavne fisb hr bow to got them. They were not taking full advantage of a wonderful snort..
