SOWING CAMPAIGN
RED ARMY’S ACTIVITIES
SUBJUGATION OF PEASANTS. LONDON, March 22,
T.h e Red Army has been called in to assist in the 'Soviet’s sowing campaign in the chief grain districts, says the Riga correspondent of the “Times.” The sowing has been militarised and Red Army officers will control State farms and impose strict discipline. ' The peasants were hostile to the first appointees, who speedily established docility by punishing 500 ringleaders and transferring the whole male population *of Ijargo districts to distant centres, replacing them with labour
gangs. Nevertheless, the success 0 f the plan is doubtful. Partisan bands snipe punitive detachments, which retaliate by shooting hostages, 55 of whom were executed yesterday without trial as a warning to faint-hearted Communists. The ■ authorities .are organising the trials of farm managers, book-keepers and officiate, of whom they declare sufficient hav e been arrested for an impressive demonstration.
