NARROW ESCAPE
IN FLOODED DIVER
WEAK ATANE, March 23
At an early hour this morning, while attempting to cross the AVliafe; atane lliver above Taneatau, with w, herse and dray, a native youth, Peter King, had a narrow escape from drowning. King, who is -employed at a farm at Riwarau, crossed - the river to collect cream cans, but as the and stream was flooded as a result'of! recent rains, he got into difficulties,’ and the dray was later found !-eapsijßad. The horse, however, had bro--ken loose, and reached the bank. ’ Later on, King was discovered cling- 1 ing to a log in the flooded river in an- ! exhausted condition. He was taken to the Whakatane Hospital. His condition is not serious.
