DOLE ABUSED

AMAZING FRENCH INSTANCES

PARIS, March IS

Most amazing cases of abuse of unemployment allowances have come to light in the, Pas de Calais Department.

It was found that the doles distributed in the town of Descres amounted to a great deal more than was expected, and consequently the Special Police Commissary began to investigate.

Ho found that a man who owned five buildings, had a war pension of 30s a month, and also was the proprietor of a cafe, had regularly drawn unemployment pay. Another man on Ithe dole recently bought himself a new motor-car, and it was found that whilst he was drawing the dole his wife was running a very prosperous business. At least ten of the people whose cases had been investigated after they had been drawing the dole for months wore found to be the owners of buildings or business enterprises. Another striking case is that of a man who, having left his employment, bought a house and settled down to draw unemployment allowance at the rate of seven francs a day, which was supplemented by a war pension of nearly £4O a year. The investigations now begun are to be thoroughly continued, and it is announced that all those who have drawn unemployment pay without a proper title will be charged with swindling.
