EMPLOYERS CHARGED

AUCKLAND, March 20. Mary Horn-ton and Robert Rennie,

proprietors of a small restaurant, were each charged on summons in the Police Court with making false entries in a wages and time book; Two employees, a girl employed • waitress, and a young man who was a kitchen hand; were prosecuted for wilfully signing" incorrect entries in a wages and time 1 book.

The two employees each pleaded guilty, as did also Mr s Houston and IRennie, for whom Mr Jacka appeared. Th e inspector of factories, Mr R. EPrice, who prosecuted, said the casts were viewed seriously by the Departmnt of Labour, 8s a lot of this sort of thing had been' 1 going on. "They made the two e rtiployees eigrt the wages sheet for more than th e employees were receiving,” said Mr Price. “The waitress got £1 pe r week, and signed th e book that she was receiving £1 10s. In the other case a young man sighed the book for £2 Ois 6d, whereas lie wne paid only £1; if they did not sign the Cages' book for' that they would have lost their jobs.’’

Both employees were convicted and discharged. Concerning the employers, Mr Price said defendants had been warned in July last.

The magistrate agreed that the offences were serious and fined each defendant .J32HOs on each of two charges.
