PROLONGED RESISTANCE ENDS.

SHANGHAI, March 21
The Japanese crossed the Great Wall into- China, nine miles south-west of Hsifengkau where they staged severe attack in two directions. Thereby the Japanese have- succeeded in dislodging the Chinese, whose prolonged resistance at this important pass lias interfered with the Japanese complete and effective occupation of the province of Jehol.

Wan Cliing Wei, the present executive of Yuan, addressing the Central Government officials at their weekly memorial meeting, indicated the possibility of negotiation© with Japan, but he emphasised the necessity of continued resistance until the proper time had arrived for negotiation. However, the Nanking Government realises that such efforts iare futile, and are now devoting considerable thought to the advisability of terminating hostilities speedily, and enabling the- central authorities to. consolidate their newly-acquired power in the north of China as the result of the downfall of Marshal Chang Hsueh Liang.

Japan is now preparing to - abolish extra-territorial rights in Manchukuo, and forty-five Japanese judge© and lawyers have been despatched to Harbin, filling the local vacancies, since no Manchu lawyers are available. The arrangement foreshadows gave trouble for foreigners.
