TOHEROA SUPPLIES
AN ABUNDANCE is ASSURED. } r ' „ AUCKLAND, March 15. There is an abundance of toheroas on the Ninety-Mile Beach, according, to Mr A E. Hetford, chief inspector of fineries. stated yesterday that there was now no trace ol the remarkable mortality which occurred among toheroas a few years ago. “In tact, l appears that the dying-off of so many fish 'was a good thing,” he said. Xlie uneven distribution of the snellfish on the beach was commented upon by Mr Hefford. “It is difficult to account for the fact that some portions of the beach are overcrowded, although other parts are comparatively, deserted,” lie said, in the sparse’areas tie shellfish were generally young. The natural enemies of toheroas—sclinapper and,’ seagull's—accounted for the destruction of ..large numbers every year. With the assistance of Maoris, Mr Hefford counted the , number of shellfish in a certain area and was able ...to calculate the quantity of toheroas available. ' The Knipara beaches ate also well stocked at the- southern end. ••
