£7,300 OWING TO STATE LENDERS
DEPARTMENT TAKES ACTION.

As a. result of the Wairoa County Council being behind in the payment of some £7,390 to several State lenders, the Council has received a. letter from the Minister of Internal Affairs, advising that, unlefis the interest payments are made, legislation will; lie brought down authorising the npopintment of’ a commissioner to control the comity. .The ehairinaiV-. referring to .the letter at the meeting of the Council, stated that (bey had advised the Department that the Council Would not bo able to pay on the dye date, hut would consider, the whole matter of payment bv March 31. The County Clerk stated that much of the trouble was due to Crown tenants defau’tine in. their rates. It Wtfs decided to take strong exception to 1 the attitude of the Minister, and (o point out that .much of the ■trouble : was caused by Grown... teMptß defaulting in rate payments. the list of such defaulters to t be forwarded to '{he Department.
