Proposals of a'far-reaching character were endorsticT at an. important conference that the Minister of ■Agricult u r, e (f Hon. C. E. Macmillan) held yesterday with members of the Dairy Board, officers of the Agriculture and Research Departments and Representatives of the cheese industry, ,at which- difficulties which have arisen in connection witn

the manufacture of cheese in Now Zea-

land and the steps necessary to overcome them were .frankly discussed. The Ministpr presided and those p l ’o,se"t included representatives .of the National Dairy Association, factory managers, mercantile interests, dairy sectaries, the Dairy Research Institute and ns associated institutions. Some members of Parliame.it interested in the industry also .attended.

Mr Macmillan stated this afternoon that the trend of the discussions was or a wholly helpful and constructive nature, It w.as evident that all present Were desirous of doing their oest to assist in ‘placing the cheese industry on a higher* and better footing. The film I opinion was unanimously in favour of the proposals Drought forward ly tne Dairy Board, . aimed at gecuri ig a better and more .uniformly good supply of milk for cheese factories, Iffi'c being an essential and necessary basis tor germing a cheese output of higher quUity in all respects These proposals were as follows; (a) The definite establishment of milk grading with differential payment; (b) regulations to be made to prevent suppliers leaving one factory for another during th e currency of th e dairying season; i(c) the licensing of fadcry managers ; >(d) the Dairy Division to operate a cheese factory 0 n the best modern lines with a controlled and clean milk supply The M'.mister added that while it wag fully realised that these proposals were much in advance of existing conditions it was felt -by all that the circumstan c es necessitated firm yet judicious handling of the situation in the interests 01 everyone concerned, especially the producers, who had everything to gam from an improvement in the cheese quality, with tlfie resulting improvement in the marketing values. The Minister agreed to submit these conclusions t, O his colleagues in the Government for confederation, and a representative, committee was set up to confer further--with*■'•responsible Government representatives.
