MEN WILL NOW CONTROL MINE
AGREEMENT WITH DIRECTORS

WHANGARET, March 6
A week ago, the Hikurangi Coat Company declined thg offer by the miners to accept a2O p er cent-reduction in' wages, and handed the mine over to ,'Scott and Davidson ito work •oh a contract .basis.' Subsequently the Miners’ Union withdrew tih-e safety men with the result that the min e was endangered by flooding. The C°mp'ny appealed to th e Union to restore the safety men, which was agreed to, provided the' dl'' c c«d» meet the • milters' and withdraw Scott and Davidson. Meantime the conditions were accepted and the safety men upturned;
At a conference yesterday, the direcors* proposal that the men take control and pay *]l' working -expenses, 'and 2s 6d per tori royalty on all coal sold, was accepted. The men reipeted an alternative proposal that the Union take charge of the mine, ith R company paying 11s 6d a ton for th P coal produced on th e surface. Work was resumed at midnight od Sunday, and it is expected that 123 men will be employed by to-morrow.
